How To Find Your Personal Style

I’ve never considered myself as a fashionable person, nor do I think of myself as a fashion expert now. But just last year I unexpectedly discovered my style, a fashion sense that works for me and that I’m happy with. I wanted to write this blog to encourage others to also search for their fashion style if they haven’t done so already. Though small, it’s made a difference in my daily life. I look forward to getting ready for the day and putting on the outfit I’ve prepared.

When I was younger, I often wore hand-me-downs from family friends’ children. They were usually sweatshirts and sweatpants. Then I had a fair amount of clothes my parents bought for me, such as dresses. But in general, I never felt like my wardrobe defined my particular style. I didn’t hate what I wore but I also didn’t necessarily like them. Of course, when you’re a kid, you have less say in the clothes you put on. However, even when I got old enough (middle school, high school) to choose which clothes to wear, and tell my parents which items I liked and wanted to buy, I almost always went for comfy-casual, and what allowed me to move freely.

It wasn’t until university, when I was able to afford buying clothes for myself, that I started taking the time to choose specific items. I not only went with clothes that were comfortable, but ones I also genuinely liked, and were at least somewhat considered in-style during the time. Even then, I still felt like I was just putting on clothes to get through the day. A couple years after university when I had more free time, and didn’t feel like I was shopping just because I needed clothes, I ended up searching for clothes for fun and only buying them if I really liked them.

Reflecting upon my journey of finding my personal fashion style, I now feel happier with my wardrobe. I have parted from a wardrobe that felt very limiting. I no longer feel bad about certain clothes not being worn because I now wear the majority of my clothes a fair number of times.

Which Season Suits You Best?

One tip I have to find your personal style is to determine which season is more fun for you to dress up during. If you can’t expand your wardrobe too much, you may find that most of your clothes are more fitting for warmer over colder weather, or vice versa. Yes it’s good to have the staples for every season, however, your collection might allow for you to experiment more during spring/summer rather than fall/winter, for example. If you’re really lucky and your wardrobe is that important to you then there are people who are ready for any season, any occasion, and my respect goes to them!

However, as I mentioned in my introduction, I’m not at that level yet, nor do I aspire to be. But I have discovered that although I prefer the warmer seasons, my clothing collection for fall/winter allows me to be more fashionable and is therefore more fun for me to dress up in. From layers, to accessories, I personally think I can put together a better outfit for a cold day over a warm/hot one.

Finding Your Style Gives You A Confidence Boost

A benefit of finding your personal fashion style is that you become more confident. Whether or not people will pay attention to you, you end up feeling good in what you’re in. Not going to lie, it does make your day if someone compliments you. But what’s most important is that you aren’t fishing for those compliments and you feel awesome whether or not someone pays attention to you. As long as you believe you look great!

Consider Stepping Up Your Accessories Game

A hat, bag, sunglasses, and/or jewelry can go a long way to spice up an outfit. It makes dressing up more fun especially if you like to match everything or even if you prefer to mix it up!

“Real style is never right or wrong. It’s a matter of being yourself on purpose.”

– G. Bruce Boyer

What I’ve learned after finding my personal style is that I can still prioritize comfort and wear clothes that are generally considered fashionable/stylish. I know people that rely on what they wear as a form of self-expression. I admire them but think that could never be me because their style wouldn’t suit me. I resorted to thinking my style was bad, however, now I realize there are different styles. My style wasn’t bad, I just needed to learn how to work with it.

Thank you for reading, and I hope that if you choose to undergo this fashion journey, you also find it fun! Just remember to stay true to yourself!
